BBF President Luke Hingson Visits Sierra Leone
On February 24, 2014, Life for Relief and Development, a humanitarian organization in collaboration with Brother’s Brother Foundation and MedWish International donated medical equipment to Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation as well as textbooks to 139 of the nation’s learning institutions.
President and Chief Executive Officer, Life for Relief and Development, Abdallah Boumediene said their mission is to provide assistance to countries in need including the disabled and orphans. LIFE, BBF and Medwish provided necessary medical equipment including beds, wheel chairs, crutches and other specific items to boost government hospitals in Sierra Leone, as well as text books to learning institutions to strengthen pupils students and their libraries.Sierra Leone’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brima Kargbo stated that the government’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable quality health care to its citizens and other people living in Sierra Leone. He said the government National Health Sector Strategic Plan promotes health within six important pillars centred on governance, human resource, health care financing, drugs and medical supplies and equipment, adding that the gesture would go a long way towards beefing up development in the health sector.
The Chief Medical Officer spoke of the improvement made in the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality, malaria, and life saving interventions to ensure no woman die giving birth. He said the 2013 Demographic and Health Survey’s Report was encouraging, and depicts government’s commitment towards bringing life to the entire nation in the spirit of the Agenda for Prosperity. The Chief Medical Officer implored his audience to encourage people in their various communities to use the health facilities noting the importance of full community participation in addressing preventable deaths. Other speakers include the President Brother’s Brother Foundation, Mr. Luke Hingson.
BBF is a 56-year old Pittsburgh-based international charity with a newly opened warehouse in Fairfax, Virginia. BBF has provided over 100,000 tons of medical supplies, textbooks, food, seeds, and other humanitarian supplies to people around the world in over 140 countries. With the help of gifts from the general public, corporations and foundations, in 2013 BBF sent product contributions to those in need in 64 countries. These shipments were the equivalent of 252 tractor trailer loads. Also in 2013, BBF provided supplies for 321 medical and humanitarian hand-carry mission trips. Within the last month the Virginia warehouse assisted with supplies for two containers to the affected countries in Africa.
