BROTHER’S BROTHER FOUNDATION IN COOPERATION WITH THE JAPAN-AMERICA SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA RESPONDS TO EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI IN JAPAN
March 11, 2011

Following the 9.0 magnitude earthquake/tsunami of March 11, 2011 off the east coast of Japan, Brother’s Brother Foundation (BBF), in cooperation with the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania (JASP) is responding to requested needs of the residents of Japan. BBF has received donations for work in Japan from a total of 2,400 individuals, corporations, schools and foundations including generous gifts from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and The Benedum Foundation.

Representatives from JASP and BBF are available at 10:30 am, September 22nd in the BBF offices to give greater detail related to the projects that have been selected for support.  The two projects outlined below are examples of how the generosity of the community in relation to the Japan disasters will be used.

Rainbow House, a project of Ashinaga, will be receiving $250,000 from BBF and JASP for aid to children who lost parents in the earthquake/tsunami.  The roots of Ashinaga go back to 1969.  The organization provides emotional care and financial support to children who have lost one or both parents.  Children who have a parent with a permanent disability due to the disaster are also eligible for assistance.  Ashinaga receives its funding entirely through donations, most of which are from individuals.

Rotary Higashi Nihon Shinsai Fukko Kikin (East Japan Earthquake Damage Recovery Fund) is concentrating its relief work in Rikuzen, Takada-city.  Rikuzen Takada Hospital was totally destroyed by the tsunami. Rotary’s current goal is to reestablish the temporary clinic to provide full outpatient services with necessary medical equipment.
Medical equipment destroyed at the main area hospital in Rikuzen, Takada-city will be replaced. A prioritized, detailed list of equipment, specifications and costs per item has been supplied.  Rotary representatives stated that the prices on the items have been discounted by the manufacturers for purchase by hospitals and clinics in tsunami/earthquake affected areas.  UPMC contacts in Japan have been able to substantiate that claim.

The JASP has been proud to serve the Pittsburgh region for twenty five years. Throughout its history, the JASP has been dedicated to improving international understanding and strengthening the ties between Japan and Western Pennsylvania.

BBF is a 56-year old Pittsburgh-based international charity with a newly opened warehouse in Fairfax, Virginia.  BBF has provided over 100,000 tons of medical supplies, textbooks, food, seeds, and other humanitarian supplies to people around the world in over 140 countries.  With the help of gifts from the general public, corporations and foundations, in 2013 BBF sent product contributions to those in need in 64 countries.  These shipments were the equivalent of 252 tractor trailer loads.  Also in 2013, BBF provided supplies for 321 medical and humanitarian hand-carry mission trips.  Within the last month the Virginia warehouse assisted with supplies for two containers to the affected countries in Africa.

Forbes Magazine highlighted BBF as one of only three charities with a 100% rating for both fundraising efficiency and charitable commitment of the 50 largest charities reviewed in November 2013.  The Better Business Bureau continues to give BBF its “Wise Giving Alliance Standards” seal of approval.  BBF achieved a 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency from Charity Navigator.
