U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Notes BBF Books in Philippines
In November 2009 after September flooding in Manila , Philippines , the Malanday High School , which had been hit the hardest, receives much needed aid. The waters had reached the building’s second floor and all of the school’s books were destroyed, leaving teachers without the crucial materials needed to continue their students’ education. In light of this problem, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) asked Educational Development Centers (EDC) to distribute over 50,000 books allotted for the Mindanao region of the Philippines to four high schools and an elementary school via a book fair. The books and other educational materials were donated to EDC by Brother’s Brother Foundation (BBF).
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined 66 teachers and over 2,000 students who selected from the varying science, math and English books at a book fair coordinated by the staff of EDC. “Our book events are terrific ways to generate attention and excitement over learning materials,” said Yvette Tan, a materials and technology specialist with EDC, based in the Philippines who led the event, “It’s all about getting the books into the hands of learners and educators and ensuring they are used to their potential.”
During the event, Secretary Clinton announced an additional $5.2 million in storm aid pledged to the people of the Philippines by the U.S. government, a wonderful compliment to the 1.8 million books BBF will supply to EDC to be distributed to children and teachers across the Philippines.
